August 14: During the Boxer Rebellion, an international force featuring British, Russian, American, Japanese, French, and
German troops relieves the Chinese capital of Peking after fighting its way 80 miles from the port of Tientsin.

February 2: Army Nurse Corps is established.
March 2: Congress passes the Platt amendment; limiting Cuban autonomy as a condition for U.S. troop withdrawal.
November 27: The U.S. Army War College is established at Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
1903
March 23: U.S. troops are sent to Honduras to protect the American consulate during revolutionary activity.
March 30: Dominican Republic revolutionary activity brings U.S. troops to Santo Domingo to protect American interests.
June 19: The U.S. Army introduces the M-1903 .30-caliber bolt-action Springfield rifle.
August 15: Lieutenant General Samuel B.M. Young becomes the first Army Chief of Staff.
1904
November 1: The Army War College in Washington, DC enrolls its first class.
1907
March 21: The United States Marines land in Honduras to protect American interests in the war with Nicaragua.
November 16: Oklahoma is admitted to the Union as the 46th state.
1908
September 17: LT Thomas E. Selfridge becomes the first fatality of powered air travel when the Wright biplane in which he
is a passenger crashes during a test flight at Fort Myer, Virginia.
