January 11: The United States Postal Service unveils the second Vietnam Veterans Memorial commemorative stamp in a
ceremony at The Wall.
October 12: The USS Cole, a United States Navy destroyer, experiences a large explosion while refueling in Aden, Yemen.
The explosion is the result of a terrorist attack using a small boat and 17 crewmembers are killed with at least 39 injured.
2001
May 29: In New York, four followers of Osama bin Laden were convicted of a global conspiracy to murder Americans. The
crimes included the 1998 bombings of two United States embassies in Africa that killed 224 people.
September 11: Terrorists attack the United States. Later, this day becomes Patriot Day.
October 26: Fort Worth's Lockheed Martin wins a defense contract for $200 billion over 40 years. The contract, for the
"joint strike fighter," is the largest defense contract in history.
2002
February 22: A MH-47E Chinook helicopter crashes into the ocean in the Philippines and all 10 men aboard are killed.
March 30: An unmanned United States spy plane crashes at sea in the Southern Philippines.
July 10: United States Navy officials confirm that marine archaeologist Robert D. Ballard had likely found PT 109, the
patrol torpedo boat commanded by John F. Kennedy, in the Solomon Islands; the vessel was sunk by a Japanese destroyer in 1943.
2004
May 29: The World War II Memorial, approved by the United States Congress in 1993, is dedicated on the National Mall in
Washington, DC.
