Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm

On 2 August 1990, Saddam Hussein sent seven divisions of the Iraqi Army into Kuwait. President George Bush ordered warplanes and ground forces to Saudi Arabia after obtaining King Fahd's approval. So began Operation Desert Shield.

Desert Shield rapidly grew into the largest American deployment since the Southeast Asia Conflict. Thirty other nations joined the military coalition against Iraq. Eighteen more supplied economic, humanitarian, or other type of assistance.

Coalition

On 17 January 1991, Desert Shield became Desert Storm when it became clear that Saddam Hussein would not withdraw from Saudi Arabia.
